Colloquium - Week 02 This week, we were expecting some speaker from PricewaterhouseCoopers, but nobody showed up. However, we had an interesting discussion in the class regarding research. My group had come to the following answers: 1. What is research? "Research" has quite a broad meaning. In general, it is the activities in which one might try to find ways of doing things, search for some information, try to answer some questions, to improve certain situation. 2. What's good about doing research? By doing research, one learn more about the subject that he/she is working on. It helps solving problems. It can be a challenge as well as leisure for many people. Doing research may bring fame and money. It can also help people to control their lives. 3. How do you go about doing research? The first thing that most of people do is read. Books, journals, technical reports, websites are all sorts of material that we can read. Then we should review the material, experiment, write code... Talking to other experts in the fields (professors, colleagues) is also necessary. Conferences and seminars are the places for people to meet to exchange their ideas, research. Writing papers or reports is a part of doing research. Ha Hoang
