Secure Shell (SSH)
Secure Shell (abbreviated as SSH) is a program and protocol for
connecting to a remote computer from a local computer over an encrypted
connection. It is a very useful tool and one that any serious computer
user should have. More information on SSH can obtained on the free
online encyclopedia that anybody can edit, Wikipedia.
Just visit http://en.wikipedia.org/ and look up "SSH",
or click here.
It is useful when building a website on a remote server because it can
be used to upload website files (like pictures or HTML documents) from
a local computer to the server. There are many implementations of the
program; some are free and some cost money, but there are of free versions
out there so you don't have to buy one. In, fact if you are going to use
Secure Shell solely for connecting to FSU's server, you can obtain a
commercial version of SSH (one that normally costs money) for free.
The drawback of using this version, which is licensed through FSU, is
that it can only be used to connect to FSU's server.
