Xbox Architecture
Xbox Hardware
The Xbox has a PC architecture, meaning it is an indirect derivative of the
IBM PC first released in 1981. The processor is a derivative of the Intel
Pentium III and Mobile Celeron processors and runs at 733 MHz. It has an
nVidia Northbridge/Southbridge custom chipset. The Northbridge is known as
"NV2A" and the Southbridge is known as "MCPX".
The Xbox controller ports use a proprietary USB interface with custom connectors.
The Xbox controllers are USB hubs (as defined by the USB specification) with
support for up to three devices: the gamepad itself (with two joysticks, "A",
"B", "X", and "Y" buttons and two triggers), and two expansion slots for other
devices such as memory cards or Xbox Live headsets.
